EKU Distance Learning Academy 2009-10

Designing Quality Instructional Products that Support the Development of Student Critical Thinking and Communication Skills Online

The Instructional Development Center, in cooperation with the Teaching and Learning Center, Quality Enhancement, and Information Technology (IT), will offer faculty the opportunity to work with a specialized team dedicated to producing well-designed, online courses for Eastern Kentucky University that support the development of student critical and creative skills. Faculty members from all disciplines are encouraged to participate. Together the faculty member and a team of instructional design and technology experts will work to produce a quality distance education course or online instructional product.
 
The Distance Learning Academy (DLA) encourages development of courses and/or online components in any of the following environments:

  • Blackboard
  • CD course (or any components of the course produced on CD)
  • ITV
  • Online instruction including Podcasts & Streamed Media
  • Or as any combination of the above

Faculty participating in the DLA sessions will attend one small group workshop (Day 1 Session) and a series of individualized collaborative sessions to achieve the goals of their proposals. Participants will complete at least one online instructional product that is used to develop student critical and/or communications skills online.  

The DLA schedule will be as follows:

  • Introduction/Overview/General Principles (3 hour session)
    (Choose one)    
    Tuesday, May 19 from 12:30pm-3:30pm   or   Friday, May 22 from 9:00am-12:00pm         

             Participants would attend one of the session dates listed above, which will include:
      • Overview of the Paul & Elder Model (Developing Critical Thinking and Communication Skills)
      • Information on Planning Web-Supported Instructional Products that support Critical or Communication Skills
        • Tricks and Tips in Using Blackboard
        • Media Production Options
      • Scheduling individual sessions in June for faculty members to meet with the DLA consultants.

2. Individual Information/Designing Sessions
Participants will need to schedule one individual meeting with the IDC staff between the dates of May 26-June 26, 2009. The faculty members will meet with the IDC staff to plan and/or schedule production for their instructional product (s). Production of the instructional products should take place during the dates of June 1 – August 10, 2009.

Participants will need to attend one group session on Friday, October 16, 2009 during 11:30am-1:30pm. The faculty members would meet with the fellow participants and the IDC staff to share and discuss their instructional products that will be displayed at the 2010 DLA Showcase.  Additional meetings would be scheduled with individual participants as needed to discuss the development the faculty’s instructional product and to schedule additional production time for the final products, as needed.

3. Distance Learning Academy Showcase – Wednesday, February 17, 2010
Participants should plan to participate in the DLA Showcase scheduled on February 17, 2010 from 11:30am – 1:30pm. This event will provide the participants the opportunity to demonstrate their modules/instructional products and share with others on how their product was used to enhance instruction in an online or hybrid class.

Faculty who satisfactorily complete their instructional products by August 15, 2009 (or are scheduled to complete their products early in the fall 2009 term) will receive a $300 stipend in a professional development account. This stipend could be used for software, literature, travel, or equipment purchases relating to distance education.

The DLA consultants will consider all proposals, and select appropriate projects based on available resources. The number of participants is limited.
